Just the beginning!

Cubbishly Kes Candles came about one day, whilst in lockdown.

On the 5th of July 2019 I decided to melt down some used candle wax that we had accumulated from some tapered candles we often light on our mantlepiece.

I ordered a basic DIY candle making kit from Amazon. At this point I had no idea where this simple task was going to take me. I melted the wax, poured it into an old candle container with three wicks.

Then my wife came to see what I was doing. It was then that she suggested we should try making some new ones from scratch. Yeah I said, we can do this, fill our lockdown time doing something productive.

And so the journey began. We bought wax, wicks, wooden wicks, fragrance, dye, containers. Then there was the eqiupment to make them, scales, thermometer, melting kettles, wick cutters, the list grew. This candle business was becoming expensive.

Believe it or not, we had no idea how to make a candle! We thought you just melted the wax, put a wick in a container and poured it in. How wrong we were.

Candle making is a science. The wax has to reach the correct temperature to allow the wax molecules to expand. The fragrance is then added at a slightly lower temperature to blend well within the wax. The wax then has to further cool to the correct pouring temperature. Pouring temperature? This is before you even think about the right wick for your container and what size it should be, yes there are several wick sizes, different types, which also applies to the wood wick. Another variable is adding fragrance and dye to your candle, all these elements change how your candle burns. We had a lot to learn!

Knowing all these things now allows us to test our candles. All the variables are written down so we know exactly what is in each candle.

We have come along way in just two months, knowing what we know now we are able to make that beautiful candle with its steady flame and wonderful aroma. We are confident that people who buy our candles will love them.
